Lou Dobbs Tonight: Behind the TV Ad

Along with dozens of community groups and national organizations, we are calling on CNN and Lou’s
advertisers to “Drop Dobbs.”

Below is the background of our new TV ad— including broadcast dates and transcripts.

“Criminal illegal aliens”

Dobbs Said The Bush Administration Was “Ignoring The Plight Of States Overwhelmed By Criminal Illegal Aliens.” Dobbs said “House Democrats set a date for U.S. withdrawal from Iraq, but will the Democratic Party remain united on that issue? We’ll have complete coverage…Also, corporate CEO pay skyrocketing. Corporate elites escalating the war on the middle class. Leading members of Congress now say CEOs are just plain greedy and they’re going to do something about it, they say. We’ll have the story. And the Bush administration ignoring the plight of states overwhelmed by criminal illegal aliens. The federal government has failed to secure our borders and is now refusing to reimburse states that jail illegal aliens.” [Lou Dobbs Tonight, 3/8/07]

“Criminal illegal aliens are sent across the border, deported and are returning and murdering police officers”

Dobbs Said To Houston Police Chief That Criminal Illegal Aliens Were Returning To America And Killing Police Officers. Houston police chief Harold Hurtt said, “Well, that goes to show you that municipal, county and state law enforcement are doing their job. When people commit offenses in this country, we’re apprehending them, making sure they are prosecuted and sent to jail. And if they’re felonies, we’re also making sure the federal government do their job, deport those individuals and when they come back to this country after being deported, as a previously convicted felon, that’s a criminal offense and of course we’re going to enforce that law. Dobbs: You talked about an unfunded mandate. The federal government refusing homeland security, if I may say, chief, is nothing but a joke. You don’t have to express an opinion on that. I can say it straight out. When we have borders that are unprotected, when criminal illegal aliens are sent across the border, deported and are returning and murdering police officers. You’re talking about an unfunded mandate. At that unfunded mandate is laying straight forwardly on the taxpayers’ back in this country, U.S. citizens who are paying for it all, the high cost of medical care, social services, crime prevention and prosecution, of course as well.” [Lou Dobbs Tonight, 10/5/06]

Murguia: “It is about holding your network accountable.”
Dobbs: “My network is accountable every day.”

Janet Murguia With The Council Of La Raza Said Waves Of Hate Generated By Cable News Should Be Held Accountable. Janet Murguia with the Council of La Raza said, “According to the FBI and the Department of Justice, and that’s on our Web site too. I want folks to be able to know that there is a wave of hate out there. It’s being generated in many respects by the cable news networks, and we want to hold them accountable for the individuals that they’re using on the airwaves. And we don’t want commentators parroting their speech, because it only manifests… Dobbs: Well, I’m a lot of things, but I’m sure not a bigot and I’m sure not a parrot. And I think what gives you the greatest trouble is I’m an independent, and I’m not going to put up with the nonsense, whether it originates with La Raza, whether it originates with FAIR, and the fact that you…Murguia: This isn’t about you, Lou. Dobbs: Oh, yes, it is. Murguia: No, it’s not. Dobbs: Yes, it is. Murguia: It’s about holding…Dobbs: You have attacked me. Murguia: … your network accountable. Dobbs: You called me…Murguia: It’s about holding your network accountable…Dobbs: My network is accountable…Murguia: … for allowing…Dobbs: … every day. Murguia: Well, we are going to make sure…Dobbs: This network…Murguia: … that that’s the case. Dobbs: Oh, you’re not going to make certain at all.” [Lou Dobbs Tonight, 2/4/08]

“If we reported it, it’s a fact”

Dobbs Said “If We Reported It, It’s A Fact,” When Questioned On Claim That There Were 7,000 Cases Of Leprosy In The U.S. Dobbs stood by a correspondent on his show who claimed there were 7,000 cases of leprosy in the U.S. in the past three years. “Following a report on illegal immigrants carrying diseases into the U.S., one of the correspondents on his show, Christine Romans, told Dobbs that there have been 7,000 cases of leprosy in the U.S. in the past three years. 60 Minutes checked that and found a report issued by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, saying that 7,000 is the number of leprosy cases over the last 30 years, not the past three. The report also says that nobody knows how many of those cases involve illegal immigrants. ‘We went to try and check that number, 7,000. We can’t…,’ Stahl says. ‘Well, I can tell you this. If we reported it, it’s a fact,’ Dobbs replies. ‘You can’t tell me that. You did report it,’ Stahl says. ‘I just did,’ Dobbs says.” [60 Minutes, 5/6/07]
